Mazda BT-50
Two Bike Rack Assembly, Fabricator's Pivot Base on an MDC Hybrid Caravan, with BT-50 Mount
“Van mount was angled out so we could use the existing cross member, and it seemed fine unbraced until we dropped a couple of e-bikes on there and then there was too much movement. Added bracing and I suspect the Oodnadatta Track would go unnoticed by the bikes now... well hopefully! It's bolted on so easy removal if needs be. Thanks for your help.”
The Solution
This Mazda BT-50 bike rack is half of a two base system Mike put together for his rig: an Extreme Duty Two Bicycle Carrier that swaps between the BT-50’s tow bar and a PBW Fabricator’s Pivot Base on his MDC XT15HR hybrid off road caravan, with the van side mount fabricated locally to suit the MDC’s chassis.
Mike’s build notes are a small masterclass in doing a custom installation right. The fabricated mount angled out to pick up the van’s existing cross member, and it felt fine, until two e-bikes went on and the extra mass showed up as movement. Bracing fixed it, and his verdict now is that the Oodnadatta Track would go unnoticed by the bikes. That is exactly the process we recommend: the Fabricator’s Pivot Base gives a local fabricator the engineered pivot and interface, the fabrication gets sized to the trailer, and e-bike weight gets planned for from the start, because at 20 plus kilograms each, e-bikes find every soft point in a structure. Our MDC bike racks page covers the rest of the MDC range.
The whole assembly is bolted on for easy removal, and the carrier itself holds each bike by the frame at up to 32kg, e-bikes included, on a 400mm beam. On the BT-50 the same carrier drops onto the tow bar mount for trips without the van. For other makes and models, see our vehicle bike rack range.
