Toyota Fortuner

This Toyota Fortuner bike rack got a proper shakedown on its first weekend, and Paul’s review reads like our design goals in order: rock solid, out of the way when off road, straight, and user friendly. His Extreme Duty Two Bicycle Carrier rides a PBC-H vehicle mount on the Fortuner’s tow bar.

The Fortuner is the wagon on Hilux underpinnings, and owners use it exactly that way, bitumen through the week and tracks on the weekend. Out of the way when off road is the phrase that matters there. The 400mm beam keeps the bikes tucked close behind the tailgate where they neither drag the departure angle down nor swing on rough ground, and each bike sits in its own wheel support cradles, held by a frame support cradle rated to 32kg, rigid enough that corrugations pass through the suspension rather than the bikes. The Two Bike Carrier is rated to 64kg, and the PBC-H mount pivots so the tailgate opens with the carrier installed. When Paul is not carrying bikes, the whole system lifts off the tow bar in seconds.

Every system is manufactured in Mitcham, Victoria, as they have been since 2007, from Australian mild steel and stainless steel, zinc primed and finished in textured Dulux powder coat, and covered by a lifetime warranty.
