Toyota Fortuner

This Fortuner tow bar bike rack is an Extreme Duty Two Bicycle Carrier on a bolt on PBC-H vehicle mount system, installed on Jerry’s Toyota Fortuner and photographed where a lot of them end up: at the snow. It carries two bikes straight off the tow bar, on and off the bitumen, and comes off just as easily when the season changes.

The 600mm beam is the key detail on a Fortuner. The wagon carries its rear geometry the way its Hilux underpinnings dictate, and the extra beam length stands the bikes clear of the vehicle while keeping the weight balanced over the tow bar. The carrier pivots up with the bikes loaded so the tailgate stays within reach, and each bike sits in its own wheel support cradles, held by a frame support cradle, at up to 32kg, rated to 64kg total. Alpine trips are a good test of a mount: cold makes cheap plastics brittle and salt eats poor coatings, and neither troubles a zinc primed, powder coated iSi manufactured from steel. It is the same carrier we send to the desert, unbothered by either extreme.

Every system is manufactured in Mitcham, Victoria, as they have been since 2007, from Australian mild steel and stainless steel, and covered by a lifetime warranty.
