Toyota Prado 150 Series

This Prado 150 Series bike rack spent a day doing what it was built for: chasing empty mountain bike trails on the Victorian Surf Coast, away from the crowds and off the highway. Two Yeti trail bikes, an SB120 and an SB130, rode the Extreme Duty Two Bicycle Carrier on the Prado’s tow bar, in and out on tracks rough enough to make the drive nearly as much fun as the ride.

Two numbers make that possible. The carrier’s roughly 40 degree departure angle means the rough stuff at the trailhead never touches the rack, and because the bikes ride behind the vehicle rather than on the roof, low tree branches stop being a heart rate event. Access stays open too: the carrier tilts for the tailgate, which mattered when the air compressor in the back was needed to air up for the highway home. The 500mm beam positions the bikes clear of the Prado’s rear mounted spare, each in its own wheel support cradles, held by a frame support cradle, at up to 32kg, more than enough for modern trail bikes.
