Extreme Duty Four Bike Carrier with Caravan and Vehicle Pivot Bases, Shared with a Mitsubishi Pajero

“We'll be setting off from Townsville next week to Canberra, stopping at various place along the way over a 6-week period. It'll be great to have the bikes available wherever we go.”

The Solution

This Jayco Expanda bike rack was configured for a six week lap from Townsville to Canberra: an Extreme Duty 4x4x4 four bike carrier manufactured by iSi, with an extended profile and pivot bases installed on both the Expanda Outback caravan and the Mitsubishi Pajero towing it.

On the Expanda’s drawbar, the carrier places the load where the van handles it best, roughly 70% through the tow ball and 30% through the axle. The extended profile keeps all four bikes clear of the van’s front boot and gas bottles, and the carrier pivots upright with the bikes still loaded, so nothing on the drawbar is buried at an overnight stop. With a second pivot base on the Pajero, the same carrier follows the family on day trips away from the van.
